Lou Barlow at Oxford Zodiac / Academy 2, Sat 28 May

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Taking time out of the mammoth tour to support the reformation of seminal indierock giants Dinosaur Jr, Lou Barlow has squeezed in a few small gigs of his own, to support his recently released and criminally under looked 'Emoh' album.»

Manic Street Preachers tour

News by Christopher Lloyd

Hot on the heels of their latest arena tour, the Manic Street Preachers are at it again.... only this time you won't need binoculars to see them, as they're returning to somewhat smaller venues.»

Ned's Atomic Dustbin return

In Depth by Christopher Lloyd

It’s easy to forget that during the early 90’s, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin were HUGE. They continuously sold out tours, had singles crashing into the charts (when the charts meant something) on a frequent basis, and played on live TV with one very drunk Oliver Reed. The band split in 1996, but this year, the band have reformed for a handful of Xmas gigs, with the London gigs in particular selling-out in record time. I caught up with singer Jonn Penney to throw him 10 quick questions.»

Soulwax at Birmingham Academy 2, Sat 30 Oct

Review by Christopher Lloyd

In 1999, Soulwax engraved themselves onto the live circuit. The tour that revolved around their first British album, ‘Much Against Everyone’s Advice', saw the band play feverous sets up and down the UK. The shows were passionate, energetic, and above all, fun.»

Therapy? - Never Apologise, Never Explain

Review by Christopher Lloyd

It’s been nine years since Therapy? last released an album as a three-piece. The four albums they released during those years produced some great tracks, but generally lacked the energy of earlier Therapy? releases. This, though, offers one hell of a shock.»

Modey Lemon at Birmingham Academy Bar, Tue 04 May

Review by Christopher Lloyd

You think you listen to music with passion and integrity? That may be true to a degree, but the Modey Lemon wear that passion on their sleeves and ingrain it onto your eardrums.»

Atari Teenage Riot, Alec Empire, Panic DHH - Panic DHH - Panic Drives Human Herds

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Do you have home contents insurance where you live? If you haven't, you really should consider it before putting "panic drives human herds" into your CD player, as it's guaranteed to completely f*ck your stereo up good and proper.»

Panic DHH at London Electrowerkz, Sun 15 Feb

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Remember industrial rock? Always marketed as alternative futuristic music, crossing barriers into unknown musical territories. Only it wasn’t like that, was it? With a few exceptions it was stodgy, stale-sounding, laughable poser music. Well, now at last there is a band which seems to have created a sound that encapsulates all industrial music should be, Loud, Aggressive, Exciting, and most importantly, far from anything you’ve heard so far.»

Therapy? - Scopophobia DVD

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Belfast's Therapy? Have been rocking the world's stages for over ten years. From their first EP 'Babyteeth'through to this year's'High Anxiety', they have consistently delivered the goods, even if critical acclaim has been somewhat varied.»

Electric Six at Birmingham Sanctuary, Wed 17 Dec

Review by Christopher Lloyd

'Fire in the disco’......Nope.‘We’re starting a fire’........Nope. There is no smoke on this dancefloor. The only evidence of steam is the kind of steam being exhaled from the mouths of some very static punters.»

Basement Jaxx at Birmingham Academy, Fri 05 Dec

Review by Christopher Lloyd

When it comes to dance bands playing live, you usually can expect a few flashy visuals, and a couple of blokes behind banks of machinery. Not Basement Jaxx. The Jaxx like to put on a show.»

Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Whilst still suitably eclectic, 'Kish Kash' struggles to offer the same level of excitement that previous Jaxx albums provided.»

Chicks On Speed - 99 Cents

Review by Christopher Lloyd

The Chicks are back; they've cut down on the cover versions, written some songs of their own and made one big loud glam rock electro-pop explosion of an album.»

Har Mar Superstar at Nottingham The Rescue Rooms, Thu 14 Aug

Review by Christopher Lloyd

As you probably know, Har Mar Superstar has been having it large over at Manumission in Ibiza. It seems that the hot weather and the party attitude of the island suits the small funkster in the smaller thong, his performances morphing from mere gigs into spectacles within the space of one hour. But hey, Ibiza »

News by Christopher Lloyd

Judas Priest are reforming for to celebrate their 30th anniversary next year. And dust off your studded leather, as they're back with their full line-up. Vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens is leaving, making room for the return of the original leather fisted rock god, Rob Halford. The reform»

Tomahawk at Nottingham Rock City, Thu 17 Jul

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Tomahawk, some say, are the most straightforward band Mike Patton has been involved in since the demise of Faith No More. Tomahawk, apparently, are a straightforward rock group, playing straightforward rock songs. Tonight’s gig got me thinking how wrong these statements are. Tomahawk are eq»

Gobsausage at London The Bull of St. John's, Sun 22 Jun

Review by Christopher Lloyd

And so I find myself at Disastronaut’s birthday party. It’s Sunday, and I’ve driven all the way to London to see Cobra Killer. Only, the Berlin duo have only gone and left their equipment on the kerb as they hailed a taxi on Brick Lane the night previous. DISASTER. But what could turn the night from a di»

The Return of the Modey Lemon

News by Christopher Lloyd

The best band you’ve probably never heard of are coming to London to play 3 dates in June. The Modey Lemon first came to DiS’s attention when they supported the Von Bondies on their first ever UK tour, blowing the headliners away. Sounding like Motorhead as played by The White Strip»

Puppetmastaz - Creature Funk

Review by Christopher Lloyd

You may have heard of them, you may not have. You may think you know them, you probably won’t. Mr Maloke is a mole, and he left his home of Crooklyn to move to Berlin to form the congress of puppetry. Why did Mr Maloke leave Crooklyn though? Did he mean to start a new musical career in Berlin? Ma»

Katastrophy Wife at Birmingham Jug of Ale, Mon 26 May

Review by Christopher Lloyd

As a warm up to Manchester’s Ladyfest, former Babes In Toyland frontwoman Kat Bjelland has dragged her latest band Katastrophy Wife to Birmingham’s Jug of Ale. Crammed into a tiny room, it's like seeing the Babes back in their heyday. But would they be as as hard, fast, slow, mellow? Within »

V/vm - It's Fan-Dabi-Dozi

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Cast your mind back to early last year. It seemed that Stockport’s V/Vm Test Records were knocking out unmistakable platters of genius week after week after week. Then, silence. What was wrong? Had the evil MCPS [Mechanical Copyright Protection Society, label fans. Best you don't ask - an editor] caugh»

An abundance of Therapy?

In Depth by Christopher Lloyd

Therapy? are back. Again. Time has been kind to the band; it doesn't seem that long ago when they were the darlings of the music press, with their dark hybrid of punk, metal and pop. But times have changed, and Therapy? have changed with the times. Literally. The sound has veered off into rockier territories and»

The Faint at Sheffield Octagon at Sheffield University, Fri 04 Apr

Review by Christopher Lloyd

Everywhere you look, goths. As far as the eye can see! For this isn't your typical Faint audience. Tonight, The Faint are supporting Placebo (who would also garner a review, if it weren't for the fact they were unquestionably dull). People were there to jump up and down, but how should they react w»

Be a DJ for the night: Birmingham

News by Christopher Lloyd

I was at Korsakoff, a club in Holland a few weeks ago. Whilst enjoying a cheap Leeuw bier, I noticed that the DJ had put on Atari Teenage Riot's 'Start the Riot'. Fantastic I thought, but how can he top that? Well my friends, who do you think could top the abrasivness of ATR??»
