Philip K Dick wrote that empathy was the distinguishing factor between being human and android. In a world already full of manufactured music it seemed a good name for a band that wanted to remain human, so to speak.
So back in early 2002 in the leafy Essex suburb of Upminster, Empathy formed. All close friends and with a mutual respect for artists such as - Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Pixies, Ash, RATM and Radiohead, there was an influential finger pointing the way forward. It led to a hybrid of emotional, atmospheric rock with powerful guitars and melodic delicacies.
Difficult to put into words but best described as if you were "fluctuating between a dream and a nightmare". An over exuberance for collecting fx pedals may have something to do with the way their sound has developed, but without a doubt an ear for a good tune has been the priority since the beginning. In their lyrics there is an obvious nod to their love of science fiction and universal mythology. Most notably in the song titles themselves (Last man on planet Earth, Digitaria, Interplanetary Heroin etc). All sung with sentiment and affection by their front man - Steve Marciano.
Playing mainly locally for the last year, Empathy have impressed their audiences and have started to form a reputation for being one of the best up and coming bands in the area, they are a band to listen out for.
