Sea Ray materialized a few years ago from out of the depths of a Brooklyn basement, inspired by echoes of classic psychedelica, '80s shoe-gazers, space rock, the British Invasion and the spring-coil reverbs mounted on their amps. Over time and after a few personnel shifts, the band's instrumentation has grown to include cello, electric piano and synthesizers in addition to the standard drums-bass-two-guitar format, turning Sea Ray into a small chamber rock group with a dense, layered, moody sound.

After recording a self-released debut album in 1997, Sea Ray recorded a follow-up EP in 1999, this time with the help of producer Tobin Sprout (Guided by Voices). Peter Katis (Interpol, Mercury Rev, Philistines Jr.) handled additional production and mixing on that self-released disc. In late 2001, the band wrapped up the recording of the "Revelry" EP - this time recorded by Pete Min (Longwave) - and has been playing regularly at various New York City venues such as The Bowery Ballroom, The Mercury Lounge and The Knitting Factory. Sea Ray concerts have been described in reviews as "ranging from the slow and dreamy" to "...Velvets-inspired rockers," "solid, introspective," and even "epic...texturally captivating." With the help of some Brooklyn-based videographers, the band now incorporates atmospheric film and video projections into its live set.

Sea Ray has shared the stage with Clinic, The Church, Yo La Tengo, Jonathan Richman, Tara Jane O'Neill, The New Pornographers, Girls Against Boys, Bertrand Burgalat, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Remy Zero, Grant Hart, Chamber Strings, Aspera, The Good Life, Azure Ray, Of Montreal and many more national and international artists. The band has also appeared with local NYC favorites such as Interpol, The Walkmen, Radio 4 and Longwave, and have played the CMJ and SXSW festivals multiple times.

In February 2002, the band was handpicked by London's 104.9 XFM as their Featured Unsigned Band. That summer, working with an independent radio promotion company, the "Revelry" EP became a success at college radio, garnering airplay on over 100 college, public and satellite radio stations around North America, with top 10 chart positions at many of them. Leading the radio charge was KCRW's Nic Harcourt (Morning Becomes Eclectic, Los Angeles). Sea Ray was the featured unsigned band on Cornerstone Promotion's July Sampler and was played on Internet radio stations around the world. "Revelry" continues to sell out at Insound.com, NYC retailer Other Music, and Cincinnati retailer Everybody's Records.

With Peter Katis and Pete Min recording and mixing five additional tracks in 2002, the "Revelry" EP has transformed into the new untitled full-length album. Sea Ray is currently looking for a label to release the new record.
