From Manchester they hail, but you’d be hard pressed to pin Raw-T down to anywhere but daaan saaaf, such is their stylistic similarity to so many aspiring would-be emcees and rap collectives given a foot in the door by Messrs. Rascal and Skinner. Truth is that this crew’s slurred and stuttered raps should stem from anywhere but Manchester. B-side ‘I Bet You Didn’t Expect This’ is a ruddy filthy slab of prime grime, an absolute polar opposite in attitude, delivery and simple style to the ‘perceived’ Manchester sound; that their label, F4, is captained by Anthony Wilson is even stranger.
It’s the lead track that’s most immediate here - owing as much to the commercial sensibilities of So Solid as it does the spook-raps of Wu Tang et al - but the brace of extras - the aforementioned effort and somewhat more melodic ‘Starlight’ - suggest that Raw-T will enjoy a longevity that their saaafern peers can only hope to achieve. Coat tails are only so long; striking out alone carries larger risks, but ultimately more rewards.
