The Lodger

Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion

Label: Dance To The Radio Release Date: 23/05/2005

agibbons by Anthony Gibbons May 9th, 2005

Leeds’ The Lodger, who share the same label as the fantastically named !Forward, Russia! are two blokes and a bird who look like an Art Brut tribute band, have a sense of humour to match, and like Eddie Argos and co. are in danger of being burdened with the label ‘quirky’.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what one’s reaction to ‘Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion’ is likely to be. This limited edition single comes on like Helen Love roller-skating through the park on a sunny day hand-in-hand with a disorientated Graham Coxon (who is undoubtedly an influence on the whimsical ‘Let’s Make A Pact’). Play it again and one can’t help but raise an eyebrow in a sardonic manner and remark ‘My, how clever!’ upon hearing the chorus: ‘Many thanks you’re one in a million you’ve really made my night / Many thanks for your honest opinion, you’re right, you’re right, you’re right’.

Clever is what The Lodger think they are, and up to a point, indeed they are. Entertaining this most certainly is but after a while, ‘Many Thanks…’ will get on one’s nerves faster than an intermittent car alarm at 3am. Yep, that irritating. Fun but irritating (the single not the car alarm… obviously.).
