The 22-20s

Such A Fool

Label: Heavenly Release Date: 12/05/2003

3786
Ross by Ross Bennett May 12th, 2003

After a furious A&R storm surrounding the Lincolnshire three-piece, The 22-20s offer us their first 7” single release. A-side ‘Such a Fool’ is a guttural guitar assault, driving through its bluesy three minutes with psychotic guitar flourishes, and a languid stomp that would make The White Stripes shuffle in their newly claimed rock ‘n’ roll throne. Martin Trimble’s voice falls effortlessly behind the pumping guitars – his punchy rasp dressing the tune perfectly.

Flip the record over, and the heavy guitars and drums are replaced with the swinging acoustic groove of ‘Baby You’re Not In Love’. Trimble’s delicious slide guitar tinges the tune’s gentle swagger. His previously bluesy vocals now roll along with a Mississippi twang, finished off with an almost Dylan-esque delivery.

Are The 22-20s England’s answer to The White Stripes? We shall have to wait and see. But on this early evidence, Jack and Meg might have to take a step back, and move to Lincoln.
