I know, I know... you shouldn't judge a new band on the basis of a two-track debut single. But Christ almighty, Blind Jackson are chronically ordinary.
The band is comprised of six guys from all across London town who, like every other outfit in London town, claim to be blazing a whole new trail of originality. They think they're chock-full of soaring choruses, twisted lyrics and infectious hooks. Alas, they're wrong. 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' is a decent-enough jangly garage-rock-goes-pop offering that'll appeal effortlessly to both daytime Xfm listeners and Radio 2 regulars alike, as it apes both The Strokes and The Stones with commendable aplomb, but the whole thing is so devoid of originality that the chances of anyone actually parting with cash for it are as likely as Robbie Fowler losing twenty pounds and being crowned Premiership top-scorer come May. There really is nothing here to set this new band apart from the established leaders in the indie-cum-garage-rawk field. Whatsoever.
On the plus side, 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' clocks in at a mere two-and-something minutes long, ensuring that few radio listeners will be tempted to reach for the tuning knob, and vocalist Sy's rasping delivery _is_ initially distracting, sounding something like a male PJ Harvey after a few paint stripper chasers. Thinking long-term though, Blind Jackson will have to do considerably better next time around to attract any kind of audience sizeable enough to suggest a prolonged career. They do have an appealing sound right now. It's just not their own.
The Face magazine proclaimed that this was "A fantastic slice of pure pop". What a surprise then, not, that it's nothing more than average.
