Saw him live at Hammersmith this evening.
Thanks for reading this live music review!
when you're having a great time, the music is awesome & pumping & full of energy, and then some fucking hippy shuffles over to the stereo and puts on something mellow & unbelievably shitty, and suddenly all the fun drains out of the room and within minutes you're leaving
that's for sure
I'm from detroit. I remember seeing that lp in the shops & thought "whatever" Then I heard it & thought whatever is RIGHT! He ain't nobody.
just hadn't anticipated quite how old and incapable of recreating his songs he was. Was also one of the quietest gigs I've ever been to with a really weird mix that meant the bass & drums were almost inaudible.
Weird crowd too, probably mostly South Africans and people who'd seen the Sugarman film. People just talked over mostly, though were surprisingly polite and respectful when it came to applauding after each song. Many of the conversations (which were far louder than the music) seemed to be about how shit it was.
So yeah, pretty pretty pretty shit.
and spent most of his life working as a brickie rather than honing is act. His gigs are always going to be shit, no matter how alluring his story is.
Cold Fact is a really, really good album though. So his journey to delayed musical reverence isn't without merit.
at least I helped out his retirement fund
Absolutely cracking bloke. Don't begrudge him a penny although I think he still gives the proceeds of his gigs away/to his family...
meaning you officially have the musical taste of middle management
and talked about your performance lately.
I told him to check your internet browsing history then we kissed with tongues
and thought he was really good. The atmosphere was helped by the fact that it was his first gig in South Africa for about a decade, and Sugarman was on the verge of winning the Oscar. They went absolutely crazy for him.
His voice was sounded great at that gig, and the band were decent. I almost bought tickets for the Barbican gig a few months later, although only heard bad reports from that so glad I didn't.
