Applying to play festivals - question for artists

leskiv [Edit] [Delete] 19:13, 2 March '15

Hello all,

I was wondering - most festivals have an application process on their website to play the festival, but can this actually happen for an unsigned, up-and-coming independent artist with no booking agent/manager backing them?

Over the past month I've released an EP and gotten some minor radio play throughout London and the Southeast. I'm quite confident that my music is good - maybe not amazing or mindblowing but good and I'm proud of it. I am a bit folky/Americana centric and have been applying for small festivals that would seem to welcome this.

Now when I say applying, I mean sitting at my computer filling out the online application or sending an email with a link to my EP on Bandcamp with my Facebook and Twitter.
Is this enough? Is it even worth the effort?? Is it better to send a presskit, CD, fruit basket, etc.? And have any bands/singer-songwriters had any success with this without a booking agent doing the work for you?

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
