Study pronounces 3 revolutions in popular music 1964, 1983, and 1991. Really?

creakyknees [Edit] [Delete] 09:45, 6 May '15

Listening to BBC Radio 4 news, re study detailing 3 revolutions in popular music 1964, 1983, 1991 (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-32599916).

Samples of music to represent these were wrong dates, as follows.

For1991 revolution, music selected was from 1982 (Grandmaster Flash and FF - The Message)
For 1983 revolution, music selected was from 1981 (Phil Collins In the air tonight)

Such a study would naturally provoke disagreement and discussion anyway, but its amusing that Radio 4 made this mistake which will add to the 'debate' .

The more serious point is that rather than being a 'study' this is more a pov that is based upon ' chart positions', the concept of 'revolution' is in peoples hearts and pov's....one could argue that there can be 'watersheds' in buying patterns, but it would be a stretch to describe such things as 'revolutions' when one is describing something that is so emotional and lifestyley as personal music............one could hardly describe anyone coming to HipHop in 1991 as being 'part of a revolution in music' one could instead say, that such a person is 'following a trend in consumer demographics' :D
