The best music is released during conservative governments

punkosaur [Edit] [Delete] 12:19, 30 October '15

1979-1997 in Britain was a nightmare politically, but it was a golden era of music in the UK. You had all the treasures of post-punk, new wave, dream pop, shoegaze and Britpop to behold. That all ended pretty quickly as soon as Blair won.

Same could be said for a lot of underground music released by US bands under Reagan/Bush (music certainly got more confrontational anyway) - all of it leading to Nevermind and generation X and all that.

I think the best music tends to be released when a right-leaning government is in power, probably because artists/musicians who are serious about their work are more likely to hold radically left-wing views and are appalled at what the government is doing to the country, adding fuel to the fire which benefits the art.

Anyway yeah that's my theory, might be a load of nonsense but I thought it might make an interesting discussion.
