It's harder than you think. By "original" I don't mean "really good" (I'm with Bowie, I think originality in art is an overrated virtue, and Bowie by his own admission was a master synthesiser of other styles rather than the freakish alien talent he was often said to be). I mean simply a band/artist whose influences are impossible to clearly determine, and who really did seem to have dropped from the sky when they first appeared. After giving this considerable thought while taking a shower, I'm going to say Devo, Roxy Music and Talking Heads
