Pilot To Gunner

Get Saved

Label: Rykodisc Release Date: 26/01/2004

Mike_Diver by Mike Diver January 7th, 2004

New York, New York. Think you’ve heard all about it? Think again. Pilot To Gunner don’t shop in thrift stores (or buy expensive imitations with designer labels sewn in by a blind kid in Malaysia), they don’t rip off Iggy and/or_ The Stooges, and they certainly don’t want to come to your glitzy uptown party. They just wanna _rock.

And rock is what they do, steadily so, throughout second album ‘Get Saved’. There’s nothing here that’s likely to blindside listeners of Burning Airlines, Braid or even Garrison, but, like those acts, Pilot To Gunner maintain their quality throughout, with the opening title track every bit as strong as the closing ‘Sound Recovery’. Single_ ‘Barrio Superstar’_ features some ace Q And Not U-style call and response action, and on the whole ‘Get Saved’ is a strong, solid album that packs a punch when it needs to and never eases off so much as to make you reach for the skip function. Smeared with the bloody remains of Sixties pop-cum-garage bands, yet spilling over with a distinctly D.C. inspired post-punk energy courtesy of J. Robbins’ production, this is punk rock redemption for the new nu-wave generation. You’ll dance, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but most of all, you _will _rock.
