Cousteau

The last good day of the year

Label: Palm Pictures Release Date: 09/10/2000

sean by Sean Adams October 9th, 2000

Ooooh heck, I hate reviewing records like this. On first listen I really didn’t like this, it reminded me of Divine Comedy, a band I really detest. The problem was, the more I heard it (as Mark and Lard kept playing it, as did Jo Whiley) the more it grew and grew on me. Then it landed through my door from the bands pr company. A few more plays and it’s totally stuck inside my head, the hum of the trumpet and the strum of the acoustic along with the subtlest of drumming started to turn into something which sounded special. Then I started listening to the words and they perfectly describe the season of Autumn as well as the band. Autumn - if you somehow didn’t know - the band who I personally have thought for well over a year, are the best unsigned band in the country and that’s meant as no disrespect to any other band. This song seems to put their name into a neater context for me. Although it could all about the aftermath of relationship, dealing with the understanding of a broken heart or simply the demise of something special. Ok, so this song is only really summing up a lot of things we already know in a metaphorical, voyeuristic manner, which is by no means a bad thing but it’s done so darn solemnly sweet.

Other tracks on the single are nowhere near as good. ‘Captain Swing’ is a very insular song that I don’t have a clue how to comprehend. It’s kind of like a jam session with a mixed sample of a baby crying falling over the top of a jumble of harmonica, Xylophone and drums. ‘Rachael Lately’ sounds a bit like the singer from the Smiths singing along to Coldplay/something slow from Grease or like one of the dodgier tracks on the first Mansun album. Whatever it sounds like, it does not sound particularly good on my young cynical ears.

I’ve got a feeling this band could do big things in the near future (even tho' this single was out a year ago on a different label), so check out www.cousteau.co.uk for more on the band, whom I suspect will be the next Badly Drawn Boy or something controversial like that…
