The Priscillas

One Christmas Wish

Label: Release Date: 11/12/2006

19487
holliy by holliy December 15th, 2006

It’s Christmas! The season of salmonella and hangovers! Of pretty snow – and rather less pretty wind, and rain, and sleet, and hail, and that damp, insidious cold you can never quite eradicate from your bones no matter how long you sit by the radiator! Of arguments, and frankly embarrassing office parties, and festering boredom, and tragically misfiring Secret Santa presents! And, of course, of the festive song.

Now, there are several approaches to creating the aforementioned seasonal ditty. You could, for example, write a solemn, morbid and serious tune about how important it is to be happy at Christmas. What’s the logic here? Fuck knows! It’s clearly a far better idea to write a rocking, somewhat silly and infectiously catchy pop, cover it in sleighbells and church bells and jingle bells and any other kinds of bells you can lay your hands on, and then encourage people to download it for free!

The Priscillas, in their wisdom, have gone for the latter of these two options, and have done so with their trademark big-haired, high-kicking style. It starts with some grinding rock guitars before evolving into a la-la-laing pop song; a pleasing mixture of sweetness and sass. It’s technically about wanting to see your loved one at Christmas, but is actually about big riffs, kick-ass drums, silly lyrics and utterly uninhibited joyous, nonsensical fun. And seeing as the only failsafe way to survive Christmas is to ignore all the hype and treat it as a slightly inexplicable but nonetheless fun reason to attend a lot of parties and hang out with people you care about, this is pretty much the perfect soundtrack.

You – yes, you! – can download some free Christmas Spirit (no, not gin…) from myspace.com/thepriscillas.
