65daysofstatic - Radio Protector

Review by Colin Roberts

When a band like 65daysofstatic release singles, it must take an age to decide exactly what to use. The band produce albums that beg to be listened to as an album, the songs hold their context in an album's scope and to remove them from their surroundings can easily prove disastrous. Not so here.»

Luminaire is voted best London venue

News by Colin Roberts

Kilburn, North London. No, it's not one of the 'fashionable' parts of London and if you've ever lived on one of the council estates off the main road, you'll know it can often be mildly hostile. It does however contain a DiS-favourite venue that has now been proclaimed the Time Out Live Venue of the Year!»

NME Awards Tour at Portsmouth Guildhall, Wed 15 Feb

As the brand-endorsed indie circus rolls into another faceless UK city, stock is taken of what this year's offerings can provide. Frills? Pills? Or just a night of cheap thrills?»

White Heat at London Madame Jo Jo's, Tue 14 Feb

Review by Colin Roberts

Valentine’s Day is spent, for a large portion of us, in the arms of lovers. Tonight however, in London’s ubiquitous White Heat club, I’m waiting to be welcomed into the bosom of a somewhat different beast. Maybe not so much the embrace, more the world of the Norwegian noise-dream that is Serena Maneesh.»

volcano! - Beautiful Seizure

Review by Colin Roberts

The formula for this album is pretty simple, really. Take the sum of all of your favourite records since you started listening to music seriously, rip out the filler and make an LP containing only the heart-wrenching, ear-pounding, mind-bending and all-too-beautiful epochs, condense it to 55 minutes and unleash it on an unsuspecting journalist who, intrigued, plays the album once and listens to nothing else for months.»

Blood Red Shoes - Stitch Me Back/Meet Me At Eight

Review by Colin Roberts

They'll never 'do' a White Stripes and hit the charts with dullardry and rehashed blues choruses; rather, the Shoes will be entertaining us all with a swell line in ballsy punk-tinged heavy pop songs for a good few years yet.»

Serena Maneesh = good, London shows = this week

News by Colin Roberts

Having produced one of 2005's most stunning debuts (scoring 9/10 on this very website here) and been tour support to the Dandy Warhols, Norweigan five-piece Serena Maneesh are in town combining their dreamy soundscapes with ear-battering noise and moments of unintelligible beauty.»

Fopp Award for New Music showcase: Tonight!

News by Colin Roberts

At the start of 2005, bands from Scotland and Northern Ireland were invited to send demos for consideration in the scheme and after much deliberation, four were chosen. The bands' award was a good few days in the studio, CD artwork and manufacture courtesy of Clear Sound & Vision, press by Press Counsel and being stocked in all of Fopp's UK stores. The scheme is overseen by the PRS Foundation, the charitable 'arm' of the Performing Rights Society, which is awfully nice of them.»

Test Icicles: "F*ck the ULU"

News by Colin Roberts

When a show is advertised as ages 14+, you'd generally expect to get inside if you were 15, right? Not last night at London's University of London Union (ULU) show.
