Where The Spoken Play

Where The Spoken Play

Label: Release Date: 13/09/2004

thommo by Thomas Blatchford October 12th, 2004

Blimey, Where The Spoken Play don’t mess about much. Mere nanoseconds after you’ve pressed ‘play’ the breathless, British Sea Power-in-a-cardboard-box clatter of ‘Polka’ is already fully chugging along, so ramshackle it could make a Pete Doherty gig look like Kraftwerk (but, quite thankfully, doesn’t). That they’re gone again in less than two minutes makes them all the more endearing still. The three other tracks may be longer but still warn themselves away from ‘fluff’ – ‘Madrid’ has high-pitched vocals and simmering atmospherics, ‘TB_’ manages dramatics without it seeming forced at all, and ‘A. Night_’ sounds almost uncannily like Interpol on a tight budget. Which in many people’s ears might mean that they sound like Joy Division, which they do a bit. Worth checking out all the same.
