The Rogers Sisters

Why Won't You

Label: Too Pure Release Date: 21/08/2006

15459
_kp_ by Kate Price August 22nd, 2006

The Rogers Sisters (whose voices appear to be drowned out by 'honourary' member Miyuki Furtado's) sound a little like a stretchy latex version of all your favourite New York bands, welded together with the molten remains of Prince's jewellery collection. That is to say, dirty and punky, but also a little bit ridiculous.

Scratchy, snarling, sawing guitars; heavy thumping drums and a simple, repetitive vocal line; 'Why Won't You' is a song that, without ever having heard it before, instantly makes you want to reach for the ceiling, toss your hair around and shout along as loudly and tunelessly as possible... at least for about a minute, anyway.

It opens with a zigzagging, prickly intro which bulges at the seams, threatening to blast into something unruly, exciting and hedonistic and whilst it somewhat loosely fulfils the criteria, by the time two minutes and fifty-two seconds are up, you're more than happy for it to be over and done with.

'Why Won't You' showcases a band who have the potential to be electrifying, but as this song is lacking in variation it quickly becomes tedious. A little more imagination and mettle would go a long way.
