Lahannya

Drowning EP

Label: Kabuki

362
rubbafish by Colin Weston May 17th, 2001

As many people know, a lot of demos suck, so imagine my joy when I found out this 4 track CD didn't. An artist on the Kabuki label, they expect big thing from her... and it's not hard to see why.

Lahannya's music is remeniscent of The Cranberries in vocal style but musically, it is like a less rock and more goth version of Twist... not a bad combination.

First track 'Drowning' starts off with long musical notes in a spaced out style.. hmm, example.... 'Drowninggggg.... suffocatingggg'.. you get what I mean right? All the while, a slightly distorted guitar plays before going into a very poppy chorus (Click here for an MP3 snippet of this track.)

'Narcotic' is probably the best track on this EP. A lovely song in which Lahannya's vocal abilities come to the fore, especially in the break as it emphasises the ability she obviously posseses.

'Losing Yourself' is a very slow, mournful piece that clocks in at five and a half minutes. It is one of those songs that you kind of sway to. It has been decribed musically as 'a three-note bass drone sprinkled with acoustic guitar' for the more complete description.... this reviewer says it sounds beautifully tragic.

The CD finishes off with a reprise of 'Drowning' which has been stripped down and tinkered with, using Lahannya's vocals much more... and it is her vocals that are the focal point and make this more atune then most things I review.

The distinctive vocals make this above average, thats for certain... and there is definetly a niche for her style. If there is any downside to this, it is that, lyrically, I think it is relativly weak, well, the lyrics did nothing for me anyway. However, if things keep improving for her, Lahannya could be a suprise package in the future.
