Mystery Jets

Zoo Time

Label: Transgressive Release Date: 21/02/2005

13183
gdobson by Gareth Dobson February 11th, 2005

Recently on your non-top 40 radio shows, you might have heard something strange and unsettling emerging from your speakers, unpleasant, dark, and sounding more like the Wicker Man made audio than those Scouse chappies, The Coral, could ever hope to. That would be 'Zoo Time' by The Mystery Jets.

Hailing from the cultural wasteland that is Eel Pie Island (maps out, please), the MJs are the most unique of bands; for example, that's dad there playing guitar; over there, that's pots and pans self-drum kit-thumping (one of two drummers, naturally), wild-haired singer, Blaine. Yes. It's like that.

Exquisitely odd, 'Zoo Time' largely consists of manic chanting, giant tribal drumming, scary keyboard motifs and skeletal guitar skrunking.

Naturally, it's fantastic.
