Sold As Scene

Label: FF Vinyl Release Date: 30/10/2000

jmoore by James Moore October 30th, 2000

FF Vinyl cash in on the thing that journalists call the "Welsh Scene"

The compilation is supposed to showcase nine of Wales' best new acts, I

personally think they've found five. Brilliant band #1 is RocketGoldStar

who are the musical equivalent to Picasso. They push the boundaries of

experimentation with stunning success. 'In The Mood' is a uniquely fucked

up masterpiece. Hopefully they won't have to die before their genius is recognised.

Band #2 are August, their song 'Beautiful' sounds like an energetic

Mansun with vocals that are somewhere in-between

Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley. Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi

are band #3 they're represented by 'Vacuum', which was previously

released on their 'Vitamin E(p)' it's 3 minutes of cheesy pop-punk.

4 are Psycho Squad who's mellow rock isn't a million miles away from the

Foo Fighters. They've received lots of interest from the US and have already toured with

Motorhead so they're destined to be massive. The last great act is **Christopher

Rees** like August's singer he has an incredible voice, the minimalist music

makes his voice and song writing standout even more, great stuff.

The other acts include The Afternoons (twee B&S/Smiths type thing),

Ffordd Allan (OCS-esque mod rock), Smokehand (just awful), Amy Wadge (hmmm...

dunno). If you're pondering what to do with that fiver in your pocket, this is the answer.
