Field Music

She Can Do What She Likes / Sit Tighter

Label: Memphis Industries Release Date: 16/04/2007

22953
Fra_Jones by Francis Jones April 12th, 2007

Field Music are one of those bands you cannot help but enthuse about. This double A-side pays testament to their splendidly realised, intelligent pop music. ‘She Can Do What She Wants’ is beautifully wrought, glistening Steely Dan-esque production providing the perfect framework for their tuneful smash and grab; strings, electric piano and guitar spar good naturedly to take precedence, sweetly accessible hooks abound and the lyrics throb with heart-duped naiveté.

The flip side, ‘Sit Tighter’, is heralded as a reconstruction of album track ‘Sit Tight’. Fizzing with a strange, electrifying life-force, the grand flourishes of the album version are replaced by staccato percussion and pinball rhythms, creating a crazed laptop cacophony. It is a twinkling power-pop collage, a skew-whiff take that actually improves on the original.

But then such endless invention is what we’ve come to expect from Field Music, their sublime expertise enabling them to fashion immaculately manicured pop.
