Six By Seven

Eat Junk Become Junk

Label: Mantra Release Date: 13/11/2000

jkimmitt by James Kimmitt November 13th, 2000

Take a look at the charts , listen to the radio or pick up a copy of one of the music weeklies and you can't avoid it. The British music market is overflowing with American acts producing brilliant , though sometimes milk-curdlingly awful , music.

Marilyn Manson , the God of F* is here casting his shadow of death over all. Casey Chaos and Amen have come for your parents , Eminem is this generation's Sid Vicious and the Wu-Tang Clan have just returned with their best album yet and quite possibly the finest album to surface this throughout 2000.

Sadly , Cypress Hill aren't enough to tip the balance back in our favour but , thank our lucky stars , we have the mighty Primal Scream and , get down on your knees and kiss the shit-stained Nottingham pavements , thank f* for Six by Seven with , put into the context , the most appropriate single in the world ..... ever !!!!

Thank them because they might just tip the balance on our behalf.

'Eat junk ....' is anything but that oh so common word that pops up in it's perfect-for-a-spraypainted-Manics-style-soundbyte of a title.

With post-grunge power-chords flying along plus the liberal use of jittery keyboards , Death in Vegas style weirdness and the , better still , sound of Fran Healy being electrocuted.

Chris Olley sings in this songs ear-bleeding chorus " I never broke no law / But I saved a nation .. " and he might just yet.

The star quality is there , the arrogant pretension is there ("Nobody can beat me / nobody can beat me / Now listen to this ...") and the songs are there if you like you the sound of pissed off 1977 punk played by Joe Strummer but produced by the Aphex Twin.

Stardom awaits. London calling. Don't look to us. Phoney Travis-mania has just bitten the dust.
