We Start Fires

Play You

Label: Hot Noise Release Date: 20/08/2007

26824
holliy by holliy August 28th, 2007

Why, ’tis a love song; and what’s more, ’tis a love-at-first-sight song, a run-away-with-me song; and what’s more more, ’tis a love song which manages to be kinda bittersweet and melancholically hopeful while still possessing a veritable surfeit of intergalactic girl-punk-rock pop-song attitude. How about that?

This, then, is We Start Fires’ more straightforward pop incarnation: brimming over with melody and softly fizzing keyboards; with catchy choruses and shouted backing vocals echoing around behind the lead. And, as is common to WSF’s poppier moments, all these ingredients are infused with the fiercely happy glow of emotion which wells up from the depths of your soul when you get a hit of the kind of happiness that cracks your face into a delighted grin and puts a confident rhythm in your step.

Which is clearly exactly as it should be. Pop music being made for escapism and rock music being made to infuse one with a fleeting-but-wonderful sense of invincibility, it makes perfect sense that this rocking pop song should provide an escapist sense of ecstatic emotional invincibility.

Of course, this feeling too is fleeting… but then, that’s why God gave us the REPEAT function.
