Chris T-T

The 253

Label: Snowstorm Release Date: 05/11/2001

athomas by Andy (quirk) Thomas November 4th, 2001

Evening Session listeners should be aware of at least two songs by Chirs T-T. The first, released last year was call Can’t Stop Dreaming Of Injured Popstars, which conjured up grisly ends for everyone from Cliff Richard to members of Steps. The second, Drink Beer, is a lo-fi anthem to that which oils the cogs of everyday living. It comes as little surprise to find, therefore, that The 253 is a low budget, high vocabulary, everyday observing, indie bedroom masterpiece in the style of Carter USM and alike. This is Chris, his home computer, a guitar, some second hand drums, and several months of late nights whilst holding down the day job.

Ownership questions what would happen if Tony Robinson’s Time Team discovered the holy grail whilst The English Earth tells the tail of messy disillusioned treadmill living, a theme continued in Sellotape (Dawson’s Creek), dealing with the intellectual postgrad with nowhere to go except the 9-5. Chris seems split between daydreaming fantasy and cynical realism, a mindset he’s probably not alone in holding (I think i’ll stick my hand up at this point).

He doesn’t claim to be on a pop crusade, he’s not on the verge of selling a million copies, but The 253 is a charming rough and ready journey into the indifferent insincerity of the English psyche. Enjoyably cutting.
