Sky Larkin

Molten / Keepsakes

Label: Dance To The Radio Release Date: 15/10/2007

27853
TinPanAl by Alex Denney October 12th, 2007

Live Sky Larkin are a shonky if endearing proposition, surviving as they do more on charm than furious chops, but one thing they’re absolutely, deadly serious about is penning pop nuggets worth shouting about with a minimum of baggage.

This latest offering may not be their finest few minutes to date (that honour surely goes to the awesome 'Summit', featured on a Dance To The Radio comp released earlier this year), but if 'Molten' doesn’t quite succeed in harnessing their unusually lucid songwriting in pulse-jacking fashion, over time its understated, shoegazey hooks will stake their claim on your brainal matter in fine style.

In fact, 'Molten' doesn’t sound particularly arsed about pleasing you at all, which is brilliant, since please you it almost certainly will, just in a way that doesn’t go waving its ridiculous pouting arse down the high street while everyone looks away embarrassed.

Eschewing the kind of listless suburban angst that so often goes with the territory, Sky Larkin are ever the genial, witty hosts, and on the brittle carny-pop of B-side 'Keepsakes', just a teensy bit scary into the bargain: "Gonna put you in bottles and jars and keep the bigger bits in the boot of the car just so I know you’re safe".

And just in case you were in doubt that Sky Larkin are exactly ninety-three-point-five-recurring per cent cooler than their suburb-crawling peers, you can always befriend them on MySpace, where their always amusing bulletins offer fine consolation for yet another empty inbox. Sigh, etc.
