Paffendorf

Be Cool

Label: Data Release Date: 03/06/2002

athomas by Andy (quirk) Thomas May 28th, 2002

Last year it was Ian Van Dahl with Castles In The Sky. A few before that it was Darude's Sandstorm. Even before then Josh Wink had the burnt and pissed in Ibiza reaching a Higher State Of Consciousness. Yes, it's time for this year's summer anthem.

Except it's not. Well, not yet. Because Paffendorf are not going to be the soundtrack to the summer. Despite Radio 1 and The Box giving considerable airtime to this trance by numbers effort there are three things that stand in it's way of success:

**

  1. The tune**

Not only is the hands-in-the-air synth bit way too short, but it's also separated from the rest of the track by a silly loopy noise that you can assume they think builds tension. It doesn't, it just shows how poorly the different parts of the track fit together.

**

  1. The vocals**

They are ridiculous. Two vocalists deliver them, a deep voiced man and a breathless girl. Aside from the main line, "Everybody be cool, you, be cool" the man also has an array of other wise words, "If you want it, come and get it", "My way, or the highway", and the best of all in response to the woman crying out "you are so cool", the music dips and he replies "Yeah, God made me cool". Oh dear. The girl should also get a mention for calling out midway: "Excuse me, would you mind taking me to the next level". Expect to see tottering fifteen year olds all over the country using this line should you step into your local Ritzy anytime soon.

**

  1. The instruments**

The synth sound (and hook) is from 1991. The electro pulse at the start belongs to Darude. It makes Hi-Gate look technical.

I'll probably be proven wrong, this will probably be number one in a few weeks. But with any luck their TOTP performance will feature The KLF on trampolines with "You Fools" scrawled on their t-shirts.
