Jackie O

Between Worlds Of Whores & Gods

Label: Skinny Dog Release Date: 07/11/2005

-Raz- by Raziq Rauf November 6th, 2005

Coming at you like a full on JSBX love-in, Manchester's *Jackie O *arrive with a blues-inflicted fuzzbox fiend of a record. Complete with scuzzy, muffled production, this is true blues all the way. The way that all the tracks slide into one another with some ease lends to the feeling that you are listening to a record or a longplayer, rather than an album of tracks they've written.

On the flipside, however, this doesn't help to distinguish the low-slung snarled track from the buzzing slowburner that follows it. While this allows the listener to initially be impressed by the fervour and grime covering this seedy recording, the feeling doesn't last and is replaced by slight boredom. This is not helped by eight minutes of unnecessary near-silence before a hidden (?) track before the end. While *Jackie O *clearly have the attitude and talent to pull off their moves as they make them, one might ask for greater craft and guile in the songwriting department to perhaps make what there is slightly more palatable and danceable.
