The Datsuns

Harmonic Generator

Label: V2

gdobson by Gareth Dobson November 8th, 2002

Wow, life must be pretty cool for The Datsuns right now. In addition to their leader being voted the third coolest man in rock (not quite as cool as the drummer from The Strokes it seems, sorry.), they're also releasing their second ever UK single!

But, stopping for a moment to wipe a tear from your eye, you consider, what do the coolest band in the Southern Hemisphere apart from The Vines sound like? Well, they sound like a big dumb rock band, playing big dumb rock riffs. And no, that's not the coolest thing in the world, and nor is it the cleverest.

'Harmonic Generator' leers and scrapes its knuckles across the beer stained floor but offers little else. Yes, the riff is big, obese, even, but it fails to hide the fact that this song contains few ideas and and even less of a tune. I dare to remember what it sounds like after five listens. In fact, I dare you to even manage to give it five listens.

At least in titling the track 'Harmonic Generator', they prove they have a sense of humour. Which will certainly help as they begin their freefall into the HMV bargain bins.
