Radio 4

Dance To The Underground

Label: City Slang Records Release Date: 18/11/2002

2281
gdobson by Gareth Dobson November 18th, 2002

They say life is made of moments, well for a slew of NY bands at the moment, including Radio 4, it appears that life was made of a six month period between the start of New Order and the end of Joy Division. Even the title of this track reminds of * Ian Curtis'* doom-laden lyrics (Transmission).

It's not at all a bad place to be, but they will inevitably draw comparison with their regional counterparts, Interpol. "_You've got your own reasons for the sounds you make_" claims singer Tommy Williams, as do Radio 4. The reason, most probably, is that they do it very well and their songs hold an effusively persuasive power. In true early eighties style, check the spikey guitars and spaciousness between instruments. Marry that with rythymic, insistent baselines and a slight nod to 'dance' (in the very loosest, old skool sense), and you have the perfect marriage of 1980 and well, 1981.

As good as their influences? Don't be silly. As good as Interpol? Not quite. Pretty good anyway? Yep.
