Indie bands don’t die, they just make alt.country records (see: Menswear). Thus, some of Cambridge’s finest, erm, minds came together to form The Broken Family Band as a ‘semi-serious’ project which has obviously gone on to be a bit more serious than they initially intended.

‘The King Will Build A Disco’ is a damn fine debut mini album which grows a warm fuzzy feeling inside you with every listen. It takes a cynical tongue-in-cheek approach throughout, but the tales told within are generally of the “aww” factor. It’s stories of extended hangovers and, well, sex/relationships… all seven tracks.

Best tracks (at the moment – I’ve changed my mind three times whilst writing this) are ‘When We’re Dry’ (“It’s the end of the day and we’re still hungover”), with some rather sweet boy/girl harmonies, and ‘The Perfect Gentleman’, which is a bit rude. Grrreat.

The end result is not a million miles from Will Oldham with a touch of Weezer and maybe Clem Snide, all finished under 26 minutes. Best listened-to whilst suffering the morning after. Possibly. Not that I’d know.

A full length album is expected sometime this year.
