Harpies

Deep/Just Like You

Label: Fortune and Glory Release Date: 10/02/2003

bchandler by Ben Chandler February 11th, 2003

The Harpies are working on trust here. Because, for the first twenty seconds of 'Deep,' I am absolutely convinced that the singer isn't actually articulating any words at all. Hardly the greatest gimmick in the world when the whole wretched genre of 'metal' is going down the tubes. Yet another young contender from the stinking cess pit that is scream valley.

This record means nothing, yet the band seem to mean everything, which is so annoying. With erratic intensity they do all they can to make this sonically amazing, almost symphonic in its twists and turns. Drums like a wound down version of Safri Duo's Played Alive (tinny!!), and other quirks pop up all over the place, as does the female vocalist, who after much obvious dithering, comes to the mic and steals the show on 'Just Like You'. The Harpies are coaxing your technical side out of its little shell, where it has lay, scorned. There's loads ideas floating around, but structually, it ends up being flabby, and spineless.
