Stop It You're Killing Me

Waiting For Love EP

Label: Greentree Wessex Release Date: 20/02/2006

thommo by Thomas Blatchford March 8th, 2006

Love is a burning thing and, when sung about with such psychotic conviction by Stop It You’re Killing Me, it sounds like it could be either arson or spontaneous combustion. For their new Waiting For Love EP is a curious beast, and whilst it’s undoubtedly passionate it doesn’t exactly exude the sort of sentiment you’d feel easy about when written in a Valentine’s card.

“I’m waiting for love in the hospital” garbles the excellently-named singer Thomas Thomas, whilst the group pound out the sort of riding riff-laden stomp that sounds like it could easily appeal to fans of groups as distant as Retro Spankees and The Darkness (without sounding much like either of them, or being that twee/ironic). The whole thing grinds to a halt within 75 seconds.

Notably, though, the lead track is the weakest here – which, considering its ferocity, is saying something. Its supporting tracks seem to owe more to the last Eighties Matchbox album, such is the metallic and zombie-like nature of their wares, and the looming darkness of ‘Judy Garland’ also seems to have a hint of Billy Corgan’s influence in it too. Plus, judging by the growling and yelping in ‘Bitch’ alone, it’s doubtful that the lyrics are written in anything sharper than wax crayon.

For an EP that comes in, plays with your brain and buggers off again in only a shade over eight minutes, it has an awesome kick to it and doesn’t half leave an impression afterwards. Whether we want to hear what it’s like when they’re really angry is a different point entirely.
