The Like

What I Say And What I Mean

Label: Geffen Release Date: 15/05/2006

14008
George by George May 31st, 2006

So, they look the look, and talk the talk, but do we like The Like?

Aesthetics and famous fathers aside, essentially….yes. This is a perfectly competent offering of all-girl rock-lite. There are throaty lyrics, a sprinkling of harmonies and a shouty-dancey sing along-if-you-could-make-out-the-words chorus, but…it’s all a bit too slick. The guitars have been robbed of any edge they might have had; the shoutyness of the chorus is more pillow fight than a rallying call of emancipation and the whole sound is overproduced.

What we were promised was a ‘girls doing it on their own terms’ slice of L7 fem-rock. What we got was a toned down piece of Girls Aloud-with-guitars pop.

It hurts me to say it, but what this track really lacks is balls.
