The 17 is a choir. Their music has no history, follows no traditions, recognises no contemporaries. The choir has seventeen voices. They use no libretto, lyrics or words; no time signatures, rhythm or beats; and have no knowledge of melody, counterpoint or harmony. The 17 struggle with the dark and respond to the light. All known music has run its course. It has all been consumed, traded, downloaded, understood, heard before, sampled, learnt, revived, judged and found wanting. Dispense with all previous forms of music and music-making and start again. Year zero now.

This is a rare opportunity to join The 17 and is the first time it will be performed in the UK

Currently active as a writer and artist, Bill Drummond is best known as co-founder of The KLF, the groundbreaking avant-garde pop group of the late eighties, the K Foundation, its nineties avant-art media-manipulating successor, and for burning a million pounds in 1994. He has also written several books, produced a variety of different conceptual art projects (collected under The Penkiln Burn label) and helped to set-up The Foundry, a thriving arts centre set within the aegis of a public house in Shoreditch, London.

Scores and original paintings from The 17 will be exhibited at Hatton Gallery from 24 April – 21 May 2006.
