Anyway, does anyone know definitively what the first line of the chorus is?

Sounds like "He was born before you're through" but that doesn't really fit with the rest:
I've got nothing left to prove
If I die before I wake
Hope I don't come back a slave.

In fact I can't find anything on line which sounds 'right' to me...
