Ian Rankin's ludicrous assertion that the Velvet Underground's "European Son" is unlistenable has inspired me to seek it out and hear it again. I think it's an amazing, thrilling bit of music, frankly.

And another song I was thinking about again recently, Yo La Tengo's "Sudden Organ", is kind of intertwined with the VU in my head. I've only seen them play it once in the three times I've seen them, but it was pretty much the highlight of the set. Here's a live recording from 2003 (think you have to download to listen):
