Musical taste similarities/differences in a band

theguywithnousername [Edit] [Delete] 13:23, 25 July '07

It occurred to me yesterday that everyone in my band has near-enough completely different music tastes, which contrasts to the general perception of a band as a group of people who like the same music.

I see this as largely a good thing in that

a) There's a range of different ideas from different sources

b) The fact that people with widely-differing tastes want to be in the band suggests that the songs appeal to more than one type of person and that we're probbaly doing something that's tricky to pigeon-hole

Anyway my question/hopeful discussion starting point is whether or not it's important/helpful/unhelpful for all members of a band to like the same kind of thing. I've no idea if it's an interesting discussion or not but thought I'd go for it and see where it led.
