William Shatner - 'Has Been'

chuff [Edit] [Delete] 12:34, 1 August '07

Unfairly maligned? I was listening to this album the other day for the first time in ages, and virtually every track (the Common People cover is pretty funny the first few times, but it's really quite weak) is a winner. 'That's Not Me' is remarkably touching, the Lemon Jelly track is the best thing they ever did, the duet with Henry Rollins is pure awesome, and the title track actually pulls off being funny, threatening and brilliant musically all at the same time. I think this has been unfairly written off as a novelty album, but that's totally unfair - the level of songwriting (mostly done by Ben Folds) and production is impeccable. My only complaint would be that, in trying to cover virtually every genre of music from the 20th century (gospel, rock, trip-hop, jazz, 60s pop, spaghetti western) it's a bit... I can't think of a better word than 'hodge-podge'. But it's still brilliant. Have I gone crazy?
