The Black Metal Thread

chiaroscuro [Edit] [Delete] 14:56, 6 August '07

Following Friday's doom thread, what a lovely day for some EEEEEVIL.

There's something about black metal that particularly excites me both musically and conceptually. I feel the urge to share this, seeing as it's hard to get beyond Southern Lord Records and anything associated with Stephen O'Malley. I can't pretend to be remotely 'trve' or 'kvlt': my knowledge of classic stuff is pretty slim, but I'm into

Darkthrone
Mayhem
Marduk
Ved Buens Ende
Ulver

With most of the classic Norwegian bands, their early stuff is way better (with a couple of exceptions, like Ulver and Dødheimsgard, who escaped the traditional framework or abandoned it altogether). The best new stuff seems to be coming out of North America or France.

Recommendations:

Blut Aus Nord
‘The Work That Transforms God’ was the album that got me into BM and still sounds quite uniquely scary.

Deathspell Omega
Perhaps the most intellectually advanced/consummately pretentious BM band ever. Unfortunately all the stuff on this myspace is years old and just sounds like Darkthrone. Their new stuff is completely nightmarish and amazing.

Wolves in the Throne Room
Leaning more towards the neo-pagan folky style - almost 'pretty' in a weird kind of way, like early Ulver.

DHG (formerly Dødheimsgard)
Incorporating much more of an industrial influence nowadays and not really sounding particularly ‘evil’, but great, and more accessible than straight up BM.

Wold
Just totally fucking weird. For fans of harsh noise & drone, taking traditional lo-fi BM production to a new level.
