Bands releasing a steady flow of singles before their debut album

Zapsta [Edit] [Delete] 01:02, 17 January '08

It seems to be a fairly common trend at the moment, and you know, I don't like it. There are a fair few bands who I've been really excited about, only for them to do the aforementioned and for that initial excitement to peter out, so that by the time the album finally arrives, I don't really care anymore.

Am I on my own in this? What exactly is the aim of this tactic supposed to be? To keep bands in the public consciousness while their albums are being recorded? Why can't they just stay under wraps for a bit?
