they ask you what kind of music you like?

Like most people here, I own hundreds of albums and listen to new bands all the time. I like a lot of stuff. Some of it is quite diverse. But you can't just say "Oh, I like all sorts of stuff", because the people who usually say that are invariably the kind of people who buy two albums a year from Tescos (one of which is Mika).

So without giving a lecture in your extensive preferences, what the hell can you say?

(My usual response at the moment is "I like things that can soundtrack emotionally tense moments in sports-based US teen dramas").
