Music Social More…

jealous of successful contemporary bands....

berksy [Edit] [Delete] 11:12, 23 September '08

I'm venting. Watch out.

There's a band who were around at the same time as me at university - we never played on the same bill or anything, but you could call us contemporaries. They were always the 'popular' band, who got to play lots of gigs to lots of fans. They're a bit MOR 'electro-rock' - I'm not a huge fan to be honest, mostly because of their frontwoman's complete lack of stage presence and entertainment - but I can see why they were popular.

ANYWAY, like I said, they were always the popular ones. And now they're getting airplay on Radio1. Like, Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq Radio1. Although it would be more indie of me to act cool and pretend I don't give a shit, I'm actually quite jealous.

But I think it's mostly because I don't actually like their music that much - if it were my ex-housemate and also music contemporary and once-time collaborator that got played on Radio1, I'd be overjoyed for him.

I do realise that I'm never going to get Radio1 airplay with my current sound (sorta experimental noise electropop), whereas said band have a very 'so hot right now' sound which is just perfect for the radio, darhling. But still - that could be my music getting played to millions of secondary school kids.

Oh, also, I used to play in a band before university who have now gone on to do great things in the capital. Which is a bit annoying.

ANYWAY, so here's the DiScussion: Are there any bands that you used to gig alongside that have now gone on to be superstars? Maybe there's a band or someone that you used to play with who have gone on to do better things since you left? Are you green with envy? Do you ever reckon you'll ever play on the same bill again?

RB x
