"music for people who don't like music"

theguywithnousername [Edit] [Delete] 13:36, 26 September '08

Please can everyone who uses this phrase (which admittedly includes me) just stop doing so?

It's snobbish, nonsensical and means "music for people who don't like the music that I like".

I will, on the other hand, except the phrase with genre references - I can accept how a band can be "rock music for people who don't like rock music" or "hip-hop for people who don't like hip-hop" if they're offering a palatable, accessible version of said genre that might take out the elements enthusiasts of the genre enjoy but that people who don't like the genre don't.

But "music for people who don't like music" just doesn't make sense on any level beyond snobbery.
