youthmovies - polyp ep

Heliotrope [Edit] [Delete] 19:35, 22 October '08

has anyone else heard this yet? i've been listening to it. so far, i'm unsure.

first track is decentish, pretty much standard for a long youthmovies song. not the best they've done, but decent.

track two is a short droney thing with a bit of adam gnade. not bad, but not massively exciting imo.

track three is an acoustic/vocals/trumpet thing. its ok, but i prefer youthmovies with more going on than that. i just don't think the stripped down thing works so well for them.

track four is pretty good. kind of ambient swirls with adam gnade vocals for the first 2 and a half minutes, then drums come in then kind of distant sounding vocals. probably my favourite on the record; feels like a progression in an interesting direction.

fifth track is a magdalen bridge remix. its pretty decent but i can't say i'm amazingly excited by it. i'm just not really into remixes that much. if you are you might like it.

the last track is pretty decent. its one of those shorter youthmovies tracks with the sort of meandering vocals and slightly angular guitar parts. its no 'the naughtiest girl...', but its not bad. i guess its just a little low key really, nothing really jumps out of it, and i'd say thats probably the trouble with this ep for me at this point, nothing much jumps out at me in the way some things always have on every youthmovies/ymss record so far. i mean, there are bits that are kind of neat, like when the drums come in on track 4, or the end of track six, but its all a bit too low key. i'm willing to confess that it feels like it might be a grower in a lot of ways, and that though nothing massively excites me on first listen, things might start too, and i can see myself really getting into the first, fourth and last tracks, but from my first listenings, the others just aren't the things that i think youthmovies do best.

overall then, some good, some bad. what do others think?
