i thought i was heartily sick of reading about the smiths but this one positively drips with insight, from a frank tackling of their 'great singles band' status (much of their quick-revolving output is dismissed as "waggish froth") to a brisk look at how marr regressed from "courageous to competent", morrissey from poet to smirking husk over the course of a few short albums.
