Captive State at the Lexington- Flawless line up?

UnderYourBed [Edit] [Delete] 20:19, 11 November '08

Went to this on Sunday and am pleased to say I actively loved all 3 bands on the set list.
Hexicon were first and reminded me of an English Beechwood Sparks. Their songs meandered prettily and featured some cracking vintage synths along with the pastoral guitars and French horn. Their final track mutated this into a vast throbbing sound scape that proved they could rock too.

Leeds's The Rosie Taylor project were next and really impressed me. Their songs had a haunted beauty that put me in mind of early Tram. The lead singer had great gravitas and held the crowd's attention with economy.

I have seen Captive State once before and this gig cemented the view that they're going to be big. In fact, I've no idea why they aren't already. Their music has a punchy urgency which contrasts strikingly with the almost colliery band melancholy of the brass section. The lead singer also has star written all over him; the kind of square jawed archetype that I'd love to hate if only he didn't seem so genuinely nice, talented and passionate about his music. At least 2/3 of their set was superb with 2 tracks really blowing me away. I fully expect to hear alot more from them over the next year.

Wanking over bands aside, it struck me as rare to find a night of unknown music where all of the acts were awesome. There's usually at least one average or shit band. Anyone else been so pleasantly surprised?
