I've only just listened to The Hawk Is Howling for the first time (why did I bother?)

It's just sounds so painfully average, I really hope it grows on me although I can't see that happening somehow. I didn't think to myself (hmm, some interesting ideas but I don't really get it), like I often do, then there would be hope. I honestly can't believe how boring it sounded, for a first listen it didn't sound fresh or interesting at all (surely at the very least, a new album should offer this). This album actually sounds like it was made by a cheap Mogwai rip-off band.

I've been a bit "out of the loop" recently so I probably missed the countless Mogwai threads at the time of this albums release, but how do people feel about it? It would actually be interesting to know, as some of you have no doubt given it quite a few listens, unlike me.
