Preview: Glastonbury 2010
Regarded as the mother of all festivals (and for good reason), Glastonbury celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with a line up bound to put everyone in a celebratory mood. Of course, the Somerset-based event isn’t just about the music - cabaret, circus and cinema just three other aspects of the wide-ranging festival - but being primarily a music site, we’ve stuck to predicting what we think will be the sonic highlights of the weekend. Glastonbury 2010 recommendations presented to you by Antonio Rowe (Friday) Bill Cummings(Saturday), and Rhian Daly (Sunday and intro) complete with Spotify play lists for each day, we’re positively spoiling you!

The Great Escape 2010
I'd been counting the days to the 13th of May since last year. I don't remember much about last year's return journey from The Great Escape… which is just one more thing to prove how truly amazing the 2009 edition had been. As soon as I got back to London then, it had become my priority to get there again this year, and I have not stopped until I was there again for the fifth edition of The Great Escape in Brighton. I’m really not exaggerating when I said last year was a life-changing experience, I literally could not stop running from a venue to another, and that way I discovered not only some of the best bands that populated last year's music scene -and who are still strongly out and about- but also some of the bands who have now become my favourite of all time. I did not realise this could've set me up for disappointment. Not necessarily because this year's was any less worth being there, but admittedly, managing to feature, in the same 3-day festival, from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart to the XX was quite a hard thing to replicate. Moreover, the delegate’s area being moved away from its natural environment -the seaside Queen's Hotel- made it somehow less cohesive and apparently, I wasn't the only one to notice how queues tended to be longer and sometimes poorly managed this year. So yeah, starting with the overall feeling, something was a bit off this year if you have to compare it to what the Great Escape has truly the potential to be. Again, that does not mean this is enough for me to change my mind from the idea that The Great Escape is still the best festival around and the only one I'd go if I had to chose. With The Great escape, the concept of Boutique Festival gets developed to its highest potential, where you get to see even the biggest band on the bill in a venue with a maximum capacity of less than 500 people, believe me… it does not get more intimate and exclusive than this.

‘Indietracks 2010 Ain’t Noise Pollution’: festival preview and exclusive interview with curator Stuart Mackay - “I'm delighted, not just by the audience numbers but by the reputation it seems to have.” Stuart Mackay is a content man. The creator, main organiser and general lynchpin of Indietracks festival has seen his baby grow from a twee experiment in a railway to become one of the most highly respected, unique festivals on the British music calendar in just three years. The first mini-festival in April 2007, with the brilliant Pocketbooks and Slow Down Tallahassee, was just a single day affair at the Midland Railway in rural Butterley, but with tickets all sold out 3 months prior to the all-dayer, the demand for a good festival specialising in proper ‘indiepop’ was clearly huge. Since the first Indietracks summer festival in 2007 (just 12 weeks on from its springtime conception), the festival has gone on to attract big hitters such as The Wedding Present, Camera Obscura and Teenage Fanclub, as well as playing a vital part in introducing the likes of The Voluntary Butler Scheme, The Lodger and Emmy The Great to wider audiences.

ATP Pavement: Butlins, Minehead
After years of hearsay and speculation, 2010 has been the year Pavement finally reformed to the sheer delight of indie kids everywhere. Their first scheduled appearance as curators of ATP Festival sent those same kids into hysteria, as tickets quickly sold out for the May event. Good, that was a spring holiday sorted, now who were Pavement going to pick to join them? I think it’s fair to say that this wasn’t the dream line-up that eager ticket holders had craved, with a bill consisting of many older and lesser known bands that didn’t exactly scream “party!” The initial buzz of a Pavement curated ATP was also dimmed as the band confirmed festival headline slots all around Europe, as well as a four night stint at Brixton Academy. But still, ATP isn’t your average festival, and as some attempted to panic sell tickets last minute, I make the trip to Minehead with an open mind.
