'Raven In The Grave' by the Raveonettes...
I'm seeing an odd trend in reviews of this - apparently it's a bit of a 'let down' or "side step" or a bit lazy. Don't get this myself to be honest.
I have all of their stuff and I'm quite a fan to be honest. I've always loved how they take their influences from 50s artists like the Everly Brothers, The Shadows, Buddy Holly, The Ronettes and acts from the Phil Spector set, and combine this sort of vintage simplicity with layers of sound and distortion in the way that Jesus & The Mary Chain and to some extent, My Bloody Valentine did. Their best album to date, is 'Lust, Lust, Lust' (which is simply ace) but but some of the most promising material came out on two EPs released about three years ago called 'Beauty Dies' and 'Sometimes They Drop By'. Now there's something exceptional about the sound they managed to generate on these which is incredibly atmospheric and haunting and puts you at times in mind of the sort of soundtrack David Lynch was fond of for films like 'Blue Velvet' and the series 'Twin Peaks'.
'Raven In The Grave' captures some of this eerie yet utterly beautiful melancholy. It's not the pop end of the Raveonettes spectrum and it's no where near their most accessible listen nor is it their easy listening album IMO, but it's lovely. Tracks like 'War In Heaven' and 'Evil Seeds' are gorgeous.
So I'd give it a 7.5 to an 8 out of 10 and anything lower than this is just silly. There you go - my two penneth for posterity. No misstep., side step just another addition to the Raveonettes consistently good catalogue of material.
